This measures your response inhibition and sustained attention — how well you can hold back a habitual tap when the stop signal appears, and keep it up as the pace climbs.

How to get better
You mostly get better at this task — reading the signal, keeping your finger ready, and not letting the tap fire on a ring. That’s a real, honest thing to practise, and it’s why accuracy matters more than raw speed: a run full of fast taps and false alarms is worse control than a slightly slower run with none. It makes you better at holding a response on a screen.

- What is a go/no-go test?
- It is a classic measure of response inhibition. Signals appear one at a time at a brisk pace: most are 'go' (you respond as fast as you can) and a minority are 'no-go' (you have to withhold your response). Because the tap becomes a habit, the hard part is holding it back on the rare no-go — and that is exactly what is being measured.
- What is a false alarm?
- A false alarm — a commission error — is tapping on a no-go signal (a ring) when you were meant to hold. It is the key error this task is about: it is the moment your impulse won. Missing a go signal is an omission error, and it counts against your accuracy too.
- Why are the signals shapes and not colours?
- Because colour alone would exclude anyone who is colour-blind. Go is a filled disc and no-go is a hollow ring — the same colour, told apart by fill — so the signal is readable whatever your colour vision. Telling them apart by shape is the whole task.
- How is my score calculated?
- In the 45-second vigil, your headline score is your clean go reactions weighted by restraint — holding on the rings is what earns them, so tapping through a ring pulls the number down. That is deliberate: it makes accuracy matter as much as speed. You also see the false-alarm rate and a d′ discrimination reading (a rough index of how cleanly you told discs from rings). In the gauntlet, your score is how many signals you clear before a single slip — a false alarm, a missed disc, or a jumped tap — breaks the gate.
- What are the two modes?
- The vigil is a 45-second sprint: keep landing clean reactions while holding on every ring. The gauntlet escalates — the pace tightens as you survive — and one slip ends it, so it is a test of holding your nerve as it speeds up.
